[ Fondness tugs at the edge of their mental connection the same way a tiny smile tugs at his lips as he watches the way Clint works, as he listens to the echo of a hum heard on two wavelengths.

His hand curls around Clint's leg, thumb stroking over his knee as he hums an assent back - and files away the way Clint's mind feels when he's pleasantly surprised, the little glimmer of happiness any time Sam makes an effort for him.

He's more than worth it, but that doesn't mean that Sam doesn't enjoy making him happy just to get that feeling.

His mind goes back to wandering, to the book he isn't really reading and the path his thoughts had been going down. He doesn't have to say anything to know that Clint can pick up what he's been thinking about - he hasn't told Clint about the promise he made Bucky, not really, but he knows that Clint knows about it anyway -
